LIS 158 Journal Entry #9: Lesson from the 1st Reporting

I did not know that the UP College of Science library has now divided itself into more specific divisions. Seems cool.

LIS 181 Journal Entry #10: Incomplete

All good things must come to an end. My time at the reference service is over. Gone are the pretty girls talking to you for no reason inquiries. I was now placed at the Filipiniana section. So I'm now back at the old Rizal library. I'm not really sad because it is still air conditioned. Hahaha. I am actually impressed by their collection but "wala pa rin sila sinabi sa Filipiniana collection ng UP main lib". Hahaha. So what I'm currently doing is encoding. Encoding tons of vertical files. I think I should really learn to type very fast. Not just using my 2 index fingers. By the way, the one in charge at the Filipiniana section is Ms. Ana Macalalad, also a UP SLIS gradute:

Anyway, I have finished 93 hours of OJT which means I'm guaranteed a grade of INC. Hahaha

LIS 158 Journal Entry #8: Post-exam

Hurrah! LIS 158 exam is done. Sadly, I knew I made some mistakes but I belive that I did well. Up next though is the group report. Unfortunately, we have no library selected yet for our report but I have great groupmates anyway. We will figure it out!

LIS 158 & LIS 181 Crossover Special Journal Entry #1: Ms. Karryl Sagun

In Philippine librarianship, I guess it is a small world or perhaps it is just a coincidence.

Last January 17, Ma'am Rhea invited Ms. Karryl Sagun to our LIS 158 class to share her experiences about marketing the Rizal Library. Ms. Karryl is not only just the Assistant to the Director for Special Programs and Events at the Rizal Library, she is also my supervisor in my OJT there. I really like her as my surpervisor because she made me feel welcome at the Rizal library during my first day there. She occasionally checks me  from time to time to see if I was ok. She even gave me a gift last Christmas! But what I was most impressed about her was the ton of things she was able to do at the Rizal Library during a short period of time. She was in-charge of marketing the Rizal Library to its users and I was amazed on how she is doing it. One way was her using internet memes which I found funny but effective. Because of her marketing efforts, I was very busy at the reference section, hahaha, not that it is a bad thing anyway. All in all, the most important thing I learned from her is that to be successful in marketing the library, you really have to welcome your users, make them feel comfortable. Sadly, I guess gone are the days where students are expected to go to the library during there free time and study not sleep. That is why we need to reach out to them, show them what we've got.

Fin Swimming Reflection

Swimming with fins lang pala cya! Hahaha! :)

LIS 158 Journal Entry # 6: Could A Library Be A Romantic Place?

"Library is a place for learning, you can learn more about each other." -me

This actually happened to me once. It all happened so fast I can barely recall what really did happen. I think that a library is not a bad place to have a date or  hangout as couples. Not only because it is a good place to make out between bookshelves, but there is something about the library that makes it romantic. Could it be the silence? Besides, libraries are free so why don't you people with a partner have a try?

LIS 158 Journal Entry # 5: Marketing Library as a Place

I think one of the reasons why there might be few people in the library is because of the branding given to library as a place. That library is just a place for nerds and it is not that fun there compared to other places. We, as librarians, face the challenge of marketing the library as a place. We must show that libraries are cool places to hang out. That in a school or college, a library is one of the best place to go when a student has free time. I think most libraries in the Philippines are still very traditional that it should be a quiet place which makes you feel somewhat isolated. However, I think libraries should allot areas that would encourage interaction so that the library would be a social place and I think it would help bringing more people to the library. What do you think?

LIS 181 Journal Entry #9: First Day Back From The Break

Ateneo resumed its classes on January 7. So yeah, I returned to OJT first before returning to school! I was impressed by the Ateneo students because there are plenty of students in the library on their first day back. Fortunately, I am still able to do what I'm supposed to do. Problem is, my body clock is not yet fit for school, so what more for work. I was moreless very sleepy while working. It was actually a good day for me. I only felt bad when I wasn't able to answer a question of a cute girl that I have to refer her to another librarian. But it is ok, I know my limitations, I not yet really a librarian, just an OJT. Pero cute talaga yung girl eh. Hahaha. I love what I'm doing right now. That's all for now.

LIS 158 Journal Entry #4: A Sad But Enlightening Realization

Anything can be marketed. I believe this is true. However, marketing is not always practical. I learned it when I presented my topic proposal in class. I tried to sell them the idea that academic archives should be marketed. Yeah, it was a nice idea but it really is not that important. Unlike libraries which has plenty of services and serves to many different kind of users, archives have more limited access and caters to specific group of people.

So what now? I need to change my topic. Guess I won't be using marketing in my thesis anymore. Nonetheless, I'm still glad I took up LIS 158, I really believe that I will find the things have learned and will learn in this class useful when I will be working.
